Leeds successfully bid to be one of only 14 local authorities to be included in Wave 1 of Building Schools for the Future. This secured £260m, which will transform 13 secondary schools – covering around a third of the secondary school population - into high achieving, e-confident, inclusive schools, offering every young person a wider curriculum which is suited to their individual needs.

Every school has unique characteristics to meet the needs of its young people, staff and local community, raising aspirations and acting as a catalyst for lifelong learning and regeneration.

In September 2008, the first three state-of-the-art new learning environments built through BSF – at Allerton High, Pudsey Grangefield and Rodillian Schools - opened their doors.

Significant facilities have also been handed over at two schools set to receive a wholesale rebuild and refurbishment through the programme, Cockburn College of Arts and Temple Moor High Science College.

This means another 6,000 young people in Leeds learning in cutting-edge facilities, together with 4,000 young people in four schools recently transformed through PFI programmes which have been ‘retro-fitted’ with BSF’s unprecedented levels of learning technology.

Two more completely new facilities – at Allerton Grange High and the new Swallow Hill Community College for Inner West Leeds – open in September 2009, and a further six schools are set to receive a wholesale refurbishment under the first wave of the programme. These schools are Crawshaw, Farnley Park, Priesthorpe, Corpus Christi Catholic College, Mount St Mary's Catholic High and Parklands Girls.

Leeds BSF programme has already won two prestigious awards.

Leeds was named the nation's best in two categories - best operational LEP and Innovation in ICT - at the first ever Excellence in BSF awards, organised by the government agency Partnerships for Schools.
